November 2011 NEWS
_ Salutations,
Tennessee TSA members! It’s hard to believe, but it’s already November, and TSA
season is in full swing. This month’s news message will help you to keep on top
of all of the new, exciting things happening now in Tennessee TSA.
Another month of homework and classes has passed us by, and two new blogs have been published by your state officer team. In the “Learning to Live in a Technical World” blog, we have posted a guest blog by TSA alumnus B.T. Peake and a link to a video interview of some exceptional TSA alumni discussing how TSA has affected their lives after high school. In the “Council of Chapter Presidents” blog, we have shared information concerning different leadership styles and how understanding them can help you and your chapter officer team reach success. Check out our website to view this month’s blogs!
There are a number of great ways to connect with your state officer team besides participating in the monthly blogs. If you’re on Facebook, be sure to join our Facebook group to get news, updates, and other information! We also have a YouTube channel that shows you what goes on behind the scenes at state officer meetings, so subscribe to our channel to keep connected.
The state officer team is also proud to announce the launch of our new Twitter feed! Follow us to get relevant news about state officer activity, reminders about upcoming deadlines, and announcements about new TSA policies. It’s never been this easy to communicate with your state officer team, so be sure to seize the opportunity to let your voice be heard! Links to all of these resources can be found at the bottom of this message.
Is your chapter already involved in the community, or have your members expressed an interest in getting more involved? If so, then your chapter should apply for our new Community Service award. In order to promote volunteer work and TSA involvement in the community, the state officer team has developed a non-competitive award this year that recognizes chapters that have taken the time to give back to their communities. Details can be found on our state website. We encourage you all to take action in your community and apply for the award this year!
Are you a current or former chapter officer? Do you want to make a positive difference in our state organization and take on some great leadership opportunities? If so, you should definitely think about running for state office! Anyone who has ever served as a state officer will tell you that being a state officer was one of the most empowering, enriching, and important things they have ever done in their entire life. As a state officer, you will get the opportunity to make decisions on how we operate as a state association.
All interested members should check out our state website and complete the state officer candidate form. Don’t forget that this year, state officer candidates can either apply to run in the officer pool or in the presidential pool. Completed forms are due by February 12th. Be sure to start brainstorming ideas and putting together your campaigns as our state conference and application deadlines are fast approaching. Good luck!
In an effort to reduce our environmental impact, your state officers have decided to implement some competitive event changes this year at state conference. With the help of the results of the Green Initiative Electronic Event Submission Survey, which was made available on the state website, the team decided to make the following changes:
At this year’s state conference, certain events may ONLY be submitted electronically via USB flash drive.
These events are:
o Multimedia Production and Promotional Design for middle school.
o Desktop Publishing and Promotional Graphics for high school.
Additionally, in any event that requires a notebook, you are encouraged to use two sheets of paper per page protector, so that the paper appears double-sided. This way, the environmental impacts of the plastic page protectors will be cut in half. Members will not be penalized for utilizing either method.
Please note that these changes apply ONLY at the state level, and NOT at the national level.
Thank you for your participation in the Electronic Event Submission Survey! Your input helped the state officer team to reach a decision on how to move Tennessee TSA into the future, and we hope that you’re as excited about the Green Initiative as we are!
During a recent meeting, your state officers gathered to start planning what will be the most exciting event of next year: your 2012 state conference! The meeting took place at the beautiful Marriott Convention Center in Chattanooga, the location of your next state conference. The convention center is completely connected to the hotel, and already integrates many of the green policies your state officers are pursuing now. After much discussion, we were finally able to formulate a perfect theme and start outlining the 2012 state conference. Tennessee TSA, get pumped, because the road to state conference has officially begun!

SEPTEMBER 2011 NEWS
Welcome back, Tennessee TSA members! Your state officer team has been hard at work developing new resources. These resources range from interactive blogs to surveys to a brand-new Chapter Recruitment Toolkit, and are designed to help you and your chapter reach a new level of success!
New to our state website this year is the addition of two exciting blogs. The first blog, the Council of Chapter Presidents blog, features tips on how to run your chapter more effectively. It also includes an area for Chapter Presidents to discuss important issues, connect with one another, and voice opinions to the state officer team about what you, the members, are looking to get out of TSA.
The second blog is part of our new "Learning to Live in a Technical World" program. This blog focuses on providing information about high school courses, picking and applying to colleges, landing your dream job, and much more. Both of these blogs can be found on our state website. We update both blogs at the beginnings of each month, so we hope that you will check back regularly and participate in our discussions!
In order to increase state membership and strengthen existing chapters, the state officer team has developed a Chapter Recruitment Toolkit that can help your chapters promote TSA. This toolkit is constructed on the motto "Dream it. Build it. Live it." TSA’s wide range of competitive events appeals to people interested in each of these different areas. Our toolkit will help to personalize the recruiting process and draw in more members.
The toolkit includes flyers that you can hang around your school, a promotional video to show at meetings, a promotional PowerPoint you can use to explain to new members what TSA is, the newly-revised Chapter Handbook to help you run your chapter more effectively, and a PowerPoint presentation that explains how you can best utilize these resources in your school. Check out the Chapter Recruitment Toolkit so that you can start building your chapter!
One of our goals this year as a team was to start a Green Initiative in Tennessee TSA. The first step in this process is to transition from using printed notebooks at the state level to submitting them electronically. However, we want your input as a delegation to help us in the decision-making process of introducing electronic event submission, and so we encourage all of you to participate in the survey so that your voice can be heard!
Be sure to check out other new features on our website! We have included an archive of past state conference minutes, membership and financial reports, and scholarship and competitive event winners! We have also created a mailing list for those who do not have access to Facebook messaging. To be added to our mailing list, please click on “Contact Us” on the state website and fill out the corresponding form.
The state officer team is also continuing to post monthly YouTube videos. Within these videos, we will introduce new information, provide updates, and even give you the insider’s look at state officer meetings. Be sure to subscribe to our channel, comment on our videos, and interact with the officers!
This year, the state officer team is developing a new program to recognize community service at the Tennessee TSA State Conference. This award will encourage our members to make a difference in their community, and will help students to bond with their fellow members. We will be recognizing service both in the form of monetary donations to charities and service hours serving charitable organizations. More information regarding the community service award program will be available soon on our website.
